Electric forests

Just as the trees in a forest cannot hear the sounds of their foliage being moved by the wind, man too is surrounded by non-intentional sounds that his naked ear cannot hear.

LUCIA is an international festival dedicated to the listening of radio works and podcasts.
It is a celebration of the art of storytelling without images.

The festival presents audio narratives from all over the world, and does so thanks to the curated production of subtitled videos – in Italian and English – to facilitate linguistic accessibility. In addition to listening sessions, LUCIA is also a calendar of live performances, sensory warm-ups, meetings with authors and audio makers.

Having become a biennial event, LUCIA is scheduled from 12 to 15 December 2024 in Florence and will be held again this year at CANGO – Cantieri Culturali Goldonetta as part of the winter programme The Democracy of the Body, with two external appointments at Cinema Astra and Villa Romana.

The fifth edition of the festival explores possible dimensions of listening in an alternation between an intimate and a collective dimension In listening to what is not immediately visible, to places imagined and places remembered, to dissonant bodies, Lucia questions what we do think to know.

Lucia 2024 presents works by and encounters with: Cristiano Barducci, Talia Augustidis, Pauline Augustyn, Giovanni Cioni, Chloé Despax, Mojca Delač, Luka Hvalc, Anne Jeppesen, Michela Mancini, Johann Merrich, Marta Perrotta, Saška Rakef Perko, Ana Teodora Popa, Katie Revell, Rodolfo Sacchettini, Perla Sardella, Zak Rosen, Jonathan Zenti…

Lucia Festival is curated by Radio Papesse and made possible thank to the support of Regione Toscana Toscanaincontemporanea 2024 and Comune di Firenze, in collaboration with Cango Centro nazionale di produzione Virgilio Sieni, Villa Romana and Fondazione Stensen.

Potovanje na robu noči

LISTENING Dr Evgen Bavčar has a special ritual. For over forty years, he has been recording the nightingale singing on May nights in his hometown of Lokavec near Ajdovščina. Under the nocturnal cloak, in duet and in collaboration with the nightingale, the story from Lokavec unfolds into a narrative of the nightingales’ blinding so they […]

From the Bauhaus to Spotify

A reflection on the evolution of audio production from the craftsmanship of the ‘radio revolution’ between art and imagination to the standardisation derived from the industrial mass production of content for listening.
